‘I said I was going to South Uist and would look in on Howmore. Since I was last there a good few years ago it has been refurbished and was looking in very fine condition. The new shower was spotless and the beds were attractive in their new small rooms.
It was a very windy day when I was there. After a choppy crossing in a Force 7, cycling north in the strong westerly was very difficult, verging on dangerous, so I was glad to pause at Howmore for a snack. I met two other lady cyclists who had intended to camp but were going to stay in the welcoming shelter of the hostel.’
Her photographs say it all:
Heavy weather with winds unimpeded from Newfoundland!
A secure hostel that has recently been refurbished.
Basic comforts which, though austere in some respects, could be classified as ‘heavenly’ in others.
