There are two Gatliff Trusts, the Gatliff Trust and the Gatliff Hebridean Hostels Trust. The Gatliff Trust was founded by Herbert Gatliff in 1961. The Gatliff Hebridean Hostels Trust was founded in 1988 to look after the Gatliff or Crofters’ hostels. It can operate on any island off the west coast of Scotland.

The Gatliff Hebridean Hostels Trust is dedicated to running Berneray, Howmore and Rhenigidale hostels, in partnership with islanders, to a sound basic standard. Its goal is to provide hostellers, including young people of limited means, with the opportunity to stay a while to get to know, & maybe come to love, the unique culture & natural environment of the islands. Gatliff Trust
The Gatliff Trust is the original Trust founded by Herbert Gatliff (1897-1977) in 1961. Herbert was an early enthusiast for the outdoor movement and youth hostels in the 1930s but his interests are best described as eclectic
Today, the Gatliff Trust is dedicated to encouraging young people, especially those of limited means, to experience, explore and appreciate the British countryside. This is a wide brief from which it picks out specific themes: small hostels, especially in wilderness areas such as the Outer Hebrides, the adventure of hostelling and personal exploration of the countryside.
