It now seems several centuries ago, but before the 1999 opening of the Berneray Causeway the route to the island was via the Newtonferry terminal and then on to Leverburgh in a passenger-only boat. It made the Sound of Harris crossing memorable for reasons of exposure, tidal conditions, wind-strengths and mist. The replacement service from the end of the causeway to Leverburgh by CalMac ferry has additional features, including being steady, sheltered and … sanitised.
