Howmore is at the hub of South Uist. It is approximately half-way between Benbecula and Eriskay, is the site of the island’s bus and coach garage and has a thriving cycle business, Rothan Cycles. The word ‘rothan’ is the Gaelic for ‘wheels’ and here is a particularly useful place for hiring and purchasing, repairs and advice. The cycle shop is situated in an ideal position, at the junction of the lane for the hostel with the spinal road. Access to a network of minor roads and machair tracks is straightforward.
This section of the website is about exploring Howmore and More of South Uist and this item indicates where ways and means are supplied. Now that the grocery shop and petrol station in the village are permanently closed, the bicycle provides that alternative propulsion to the nearest stores.
