Robert Macfarlane, an acclaimed travel writer, has produced Mountains of the Mind, The Wild Places and The Old Ways; A Journey On Foot. This is an extract from an article of his in the Financial Times: ‘From Rhenigidale, the track contours audaciously above steep-sided sea-coves, marked with rust-lines of seaweed. Raised stripes of feannagan (lazy beds) are still visible on the fellsides; vestiges from the crofting years. After a mile, the path cuts into sheltered Gleann Trollamaraig, and here, protected from the sea-wind,flourishes a dwarf forest of willow and aspen, honeysuckle, foxglove and woodrush.’
