If, as suggested in a previous item, there were an airfield, albeit redundant, on Berneray then this photograph and the aerial image here would be part of the navigation guides. One aspect of the attractiveness of the island is how circumspect it is. Another relates, of course, to the causeway which may have diminished Berneray’s island status, but provides that much appreciated feature, constant access. It’s there to be enjoyed and its hostel provides welcome accommodation as well as a stunning location. There is a single-bed (not a bunk-bed), in the right-hand annex, from which the occupant can savour views of shore and sea. it is, without doubt, a five-star situation.
