Howmore has been a popular hostel since it opened in 1966, providing accommodation on the west coast of South Uist. Sea, sand dunes and machair are within strolling distance, as is some of the Hebrides best hill walking. A live Gaelic culture all round explain the hostel's popularity. For twenty five years, Mrs MacSween served as the warden and was remebered by many a hosteller for her quiet and charming manner, her patience and cups of tea. Her daughter, Betty MacDonald now runs the hostel.

Hostels are run by the Gatliff Hebridean Hostels Trust, a charitable organisation which helps local people run traditional crofts as simple hostels. No advance bookings accepted.
