Hostels

The Gatliff Hebridean Hostels Trust is currently involved in the operation of four Crofters' Hostels in the Western Isles of Scotland. They are on Lewis, North Harris, Berneray, part of North Uist, and South Uist.

The Garenin Hostel on the west coast of Lewis is one of the warmer buildings in the UK. A ground-source heat-pump has been fitted and energy from 70 metres undergound makes this hostel particularly attractive during the chilly days and nights of Winter and the colder periods of the Spring.

Rhenigidale, in North Harris, was once perhaps the remotest hostel in the UK, approached only by footpath or a sea-trek, until a metalled road opened in 1990. Berneray, now joined to North Uist by a causeway, has a stunning setting on a beach overlooking The Minch, while Howmore is situated close to the distinctive machair beaches on the western coast of South Uist.
